Our History

The Johnson City Community Concert Band was founded in September 1983 by members of the faculty of East Tennessee State University. Its purpose was to provide an opportunity for musicians to play on a voluntary, avocational basis, especially those who might have stopped playing after high school or college and did not have ready access to other playing opportunities.

For the first few years, JCCCB was financially supported by the Johnson City/Washington County Chamber of Commerce, and was assisted by ETSU, which provided rehearsal space and lent it music, as well as the direct participation of music faculty. The band has averaged between four and eight concerts per year throughout its forty-year lifespan, all of them free, and has focused many of those performances on specialized audiences such as senior citizens, veterans, school children, and ceremonial occasions throughout the Tri-Cities area.

Presently, the band’s membership includes approximately 90 brass, woodwind, and percussion instrumentalists from the Tri-Cities area who are professional, semi-professional, and amateur musicians. With membership turnover being relatively small, the members have formed friendly bonds with one another. JCCCB operates as a 501(c)(3), not-for-profit, Tennessee corporation and is funded entirely through donations and membership.
